How to Make Kava

There are several different ways to make kava with kava powder. We are going to cover a traditional method and a contemporary method. For all methods, you’ll need to get some kava powder, which can be purchased online or in health stores. You’ll also need any vessels you want to use—for example, if you’re going to strain your drink through cheesecloth or muslin cloth, you’ll need some pots or bowls that are big enough for straining.

However, before you start you are going to want to determine what your mixing ratios are:

Kava mixing ratios

Fiji Strength

Fiji Ratios A

The most common ratio for Fiji kava is 20 parts waters to 1 part kava, with a 5 gm of kava powder per serve basis.

If you’re new to the world of kava, it’s best to start with the Fijian method and work your way up. However, if you do not feel comfortable drinking this amount, then you should stop drinking kava and talk to your doctor about it before continuing.

On the other hand, if you feel comfortable drinking the smaller ratio amounts of kava to water, then try increasing the amount to the Vanuatu Strength.

Vanuatu Strength.

Vanuatu kava culture determines that kava is drunk at a stronger mix than Fiji. This means you drink less kava juice, over a shorter amount of time but the kava effect is stronger overall.

For Vanuatu Strength, use a 5 parts water to 1 part kava powder, with a 10gm of kava powder per serve basis. This is not for the faint-hearted and we would recommend working your way up to this.

How to make Kava juice using Instant kava

Some Instant kava users let the solution sit for 10 minutes and then stir again before drinking. They claim that this makes the kava juice stronger. However, we believe that this defeats the purpose of Instant kava and the increase in strength is negligible.
